In an earlier post, we recounted the exhilarating evening we spent listening to Stephen Coles @stewf’s talk, A Typeface is a Chair: A simple metaphor that can enlighten the ways in which type is made, judged, selected, and used. We loved the talk because it got us thinking how something as universal (to designers) as type could be aligned with different metaphors. Type could be whatever we decide it is.
With that simple thought in mind, we set out to construct what type was to each of us. The only ”rule” was that the metaphor had to hold up throughout the presentation. It couldn’t be a one-trick pony that worked with an initial thought and not extend beyond that.
The results were as varied and interesting as the people that created them. Take a look, let us know your thoughts and, more importantly, what do you think type is?
